Cats & Dogs

I was driving back home last Monday at around 8:30 PM. I saw some of my neighbours outside, curiously watching something. I didn't notice anything unusual, but the rest around never took their eyes off my neighbour's house which is to the left of mine. It was almost like the calm before the storm. I stood perplexed.

Moments later, I saw a cat, with its tail up, looking absolutely terrified about something, running and jumping around all over. A second later, I saw a dog chasing it. I could see it in its eyes, the killer looks; it wanted to rip the cat's head off. But alas, the cat climbed up a tree and jumped on to a roof and walked off nerveless. The dog stood there, barking ferociously, until the cat was out of its sight.

We grew up watching Tom being whooped by Spike in "Tom & Jerry". But I don't quite understand the enmity between cats and dogs.

This antagonism is legendary. The hostility is known to have existed ever since the homo-sapiens domesticated these animals.

If we had to take sides, then what do we do? Aren't dogs mans best friends?

What is it about the cat that makes the dogs go wild?

Can't we ever get them to sign a peace treaty?

Answer away...

  1. Forget animals for a while
First get all those "homo" sapiens in the world who fight for religion, region, race, etc to sign a peace treaty. Then we shall come back to these poor things.

  2. Maybe its just good old jealousy!! Dogs feel threatened that someone is trying to take away their tag of "Man's best friend"!

  3. When the most intelligent animals in this world fight for "no reason", why can't those dumb animals fight? If you have noticed, dogs normally bark at cows, no idea what may be the reason. We may have to enter the animal world to understand all those things.

  4. I resent the previous comment. Dogs are not dumb by any means. They are one of the most intelligent and sensitive animals. They may not be able to speak but they can sense a lot of things that we cannot.

Why dogs hate cats? my guess - cats are bl**dy ungrateful creatures who will eat from your hand one day and scratch you with their claws the next day. Dogs on the other hand, are loyal to the core. So they cannot stand such a treacherous animal. (LOL!!)

Reality - When a dog sees a cat for the first time, it is just something the dog wants to chase, just like a squirrel or a rat or bird- not with any intention to harm. This is usually because the animal (cat or cow or whatever) strayed into the dog's territory (like its house, etc) and it wants to let the animal know that its presence is not welcome. However, not all dogs chase cats. There are many households that have a pet cat along with a dog (without any problems).
